Signs of a Pure Heart and How to Attain It According to Sunnah and Hadith
The heart is the center of a believer’s faith, guiding their thoughts, actions, and connection with Allah ﷻ. A pure heart brings peace, sincerity, and closeness to the Creator. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of the heart, saying:
"Indeed, in the body, there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart."
(Bukhari & Muslim)
So, how can we recognize if our heart is pure? And what steps can we take to cleanse and purify it? Let’s explore the signs of a pure heart and how to attain it according to the Sunnah and Hadith.
Signs of a Pure Heart
1. Love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ Above All
A pure heart is filled with deep love for Allah and His Prophet ﷺ, prioritizing obedience to them above worldly desires. Allah ﷻ says:
"Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me, so Allah will love you and forgive your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'"
(Qur’an 3:31)
Loving Allah means seeking His pleasure in everything we do, making the Sunnah our way of life.
2. Quick to Repent and Seek Forgiveness
A person with a clean heart never delays repentance. They acknowledge their sins and turn back to Allah with sincerity. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Every son of Adam sins, and the best of those who sin are those who repent."
(Tirmidhi, 2499)
A pure heart does not hold on to arrogance but humbles itself before its Creator.
3. Free from Hatred and Grudges
One of the strongest signs of a pure heart is the absence of jealousy, hatred, and grudges. The Prophet ﷺ once pointed to a man and said:
"This man is one of the people of Paradise."
When asked about his secret, the man replied:
"I do not hold any ill will towards a fellow Muslim, nor do I envy anyone for the blessings that Allah has given them."
(Ahmad, 12697)
To have a pure heart, one must forgive others and remove negative feelings.
4. Finds Joy in Worship
A clean heart finds peace in prayer, fasting, and reading the Qur’an. Allah ﷻ says:
"Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah, hearts find peace."
(Qur’an 13:28)
When worship feels like a burden, it is a sign that the heart needs purification.
5. Prefers the Hereafter Over This World
A pure heart prioritizes the eternal life of the Hereafter over temporary worldly pleasures. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler."
(Bukhari, 6416)
This means detaching from materialism and focusing on what truly matters—pleasing Allah.
How to Attain a Pure Heart
1. Strengthen Your Relationship with the Qur’an
The Qur’an is the ultimate guide for purification. It softens the heart, heals spiritual diseases, and fills the soul with light. Recite it, reflect upon it, and live by it.
2. Engage in Constant Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The example of the one who remembers Allah and the one who does not is like the living and the dead."
(Bukhari, 6407)
Frequent dhikr, such as SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and La ilaha illa Allah, keeps the heart alive and connected to Allah.
3. Perform Good Deeds with Sincerity
A pure heart does good for the sake of Allah alone, not for praise or recognition. The Prophet ﷺ warned:
"Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will get what they intended."
(Bukhari, 1)
Always renew your intentions and strive for sincerity in all actions.
4. Make Du’a for Heart Purification
The Prophet ﷺ would frequently make this du’a:
"O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion."
(Tirmidhi, 2140)
Ask Allah sincerely to purify your heart and keep you steadfast in faith.
5. Keep Good Company
The people we surround ourselves with influence our hearts. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"A person follows the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look at whom he takes as a friend."
(Abu Dawood, 4833)
Stay close to those who remind you of Allah and encourage righteousness.
Conclusion
A pure heart is the key to success in this world and the Hereafter. It is a heart filled with love for Allah, free from hatred, and focused on good deeds. Achieving a clean heart requires effort, sincerity, and reliance on Allah’s guidance.
May Allah grant us pure hearts and make us among those who enter Jannah with peace. Ameen.
