Are All Religions True According to Islam?

Introduction

In today’s world, religious pluralism is often discussed as people seek harmony among different beliefs. Some claim that all religions are equally true and valid paths to God. However, what does Islam say about this?

Islam teaches that truth is absolute and not relative. While Islam promotes respect and peaceful coexistence with people of all faiths, it also asserts that only one true religion exists in the sight of Allah. This article will explore the Islamic perspective on whether all religions are true, based on the Qur’an, Sunnah, and Hadith.

1. Islam’s View on the Truth of Religions

a. Islam as the Only True Religion

Islam is clear in stating that the only true path to God is through submission to Him. Allah says in the Qur’an:

"Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam."
(Qur’an, Surah Aal-e-Imran: 19)

This verse affirms that Islam is the only religion that Allah has accepted. Although previous prophets were sent with divine guidance, their messages were either lost or distorted over time. Islam is considered the final and preserved message.

b. The Message of All Prophets Was Islam

Islam teaches that all prophets—from Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all)—were sent with the same fundamental message: worship One God (Tawheed).

"And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], ‘Worship Allah and avoid false gods.’"
(Qur’an, Surah An-Nahl: 36)

However, over time, many religious teachings were altered, and only Islam remains in its pure and final form.

2. Do Other Religions Contain Some Truth?

Islam acknowledges that other religions may contain traces of truth because they originated from divine revelation. However, Islam also states that their scriptures have been changed and are no longer in their original form.

Allah says:

"Among them are those who distort the Scripture with their tongues so you think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, 'This is from Allah,' but it is not from Allah. And they speak untruth about Allah while they know."
(Qur’an, Surah Aal-e-Imran: 78)

This means that while some elements of truth exist, the core doctrines of other religions have been altered over time.

3. Can Non-Muslims Achieve Salvation?

A common question is whether people who follow other religions can attain salvation (Jannah, or Paradise). Islam teaches that salvation is only through belief in Allah and following His final revelation, Islam.

"And whoever desires other than Islam as religion—never will it be accepted from him, and he will be in the Hereafter among the losers."
(Qur’an, Surah Aal-e-Imran: 85)

However, Islam also teaches that Allah is Most Just and Most Merciful. Those who never received the message of Islam or were misled about it will be judged fairly by Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"There is no one who hears of me, whether he is a Jew or a Christian, and then dies without believing in what I was sent with, except that he will be among the inhabitants of the Hellfire."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 153)

This means that those who reject Islam after knowing its truth are held accountable.

4. How Should Muslims Treat People of Other Religions?

Even though Islam teaches that only one true religion exists, it also commands Muslims to respect and engage peacefully with people of different faiths.

a. No Compulsion in Religion

Islam strictly prohibits forcing anyone to convert.

"There is no compulsion in religion. The right course has become clear from the wrong."
(Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah: 256)

Faith must be a personal choice, and Muslims are encouraged to share Islam with wisdom, not through coercion.

b. Kindness and Justice Towards Non-Muslims

Islam teaches that Muslims should be fair and kind to those who do not harm them.

"Allah does not forbid you from being righteous and just toward those who have not fought you because of religion or expelled you from your homes."
(Qur’an, Surah Al-Mumtahanah: 8)

This means that peaceful coexistence is an Islamic principle.

5. Why Is Islam the Final Religion?

Islam is not just another religion—it is a complete way of life that covers spiritual, moral, and legal aspects. It is considered the final message from Allah to humanity.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"I am the last of the prophets, and there is no prophet after me."
(Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 4252)

This means that no new divine revelations will come after Islam.

Allah also says:

"This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion."
(Qur’an, Surah Al-Ma’idah: 3)

This verse highlights that Islam is complete and universal for all people.

Conclusion

Islam teaches that not all religions are equally true. While other religions may contain elements of truth, only Islam remains in its original and final form.

  1. Islam is the only true religion accepted by Allah.
  2. Previous religions were originally true but were later changed.
  3. Salvation is only through belief in Allah and following Islam.
  4. Muslims must respect and be just towards non-Muslims.
  5. Islam is the final and complete message for humanity.

While respecting all people, Muslims believe that the path to true guidance is Islam alone. Therefore, Muslims are encouraged to spread Islam with wisdom and invite others to the truth.

May Allah guide us all to the straight path.
